In the 1930s the dark clouds of war covered the world. In Japan, the military increased its hold on the country, moving towards war. In September 1939, deeply concerned about the political and military situation, Kyososama began to send out petitions that he entitled "The Great Japanese Spirit". In the petitions he warned of the errors in government policy and set forth the policies by which Japan would win certain victory through the renunciation of war. He sent these petitions, over a thousand at a time, to influential persons and officials in the government and military. At that time, the authorities were persecuting anyone who failed to follow the official line, so it is nothing short of miraculous that Kyososama and Kyobosama continued to clearly state opposing positions without being either arrested or imprisoned. Most Japanese leaders failed to listen, however, and lead Japan down the road to war. As Kyososama had predicted, Japan suffered an unprecedented defeat on August 15, 1945.
Petitions to Japan's leaders

Japan was in chaos after the war, and the people suffered greatly. Seeing these circumstances, Kyobosama -- who best knew the extent of Kyososama's Divine Power -- repeatedly requested Kyososama to found Shinreikyo. Finally, Kyososama accepted her entreaties, and established Shinreikyo to rebuild Japan and help all people. Since its founding, Shinreikyo has developed with astonishing rapidity. In 1952, Shinreikyo activities started in Tokyo. In the following year Shinreikyo opened the Tokyo Branch in Akasaka, where the present headquarters are located. In 1955 a delegation from the Tokyo Metropolitan Medical Association visited Shinreikyo for an investigation, which convinced the doctors that Shinreikyo miracles were real.

After losing the war, Japan started moving down the road of economic growth and towards a miraculous recovery. In the 1960s and 1970s, however, the Japanese government held discussions leading to the establishment of the 1970 security agreement with the U.S. The left-wing, revolutionary movement went into a frenzy, and it looked as if Japan might once again plunge into chaos. In response, Kyososama organized the Association to Revive the Japanese Spirit, which helped quiet this tempest and informed people of the correct way for individuals, Japan, and the world. He himself took the lead by traveling the length and breadth of Japan giving public lectures. By this major movement, Japan avoided falling under Communist influence, and the world avoided nuclear war with the possible extinction of humanity.
