The founder of Shinreikyo is referred to by the title "Kyososama". In 1891, Kyososama was born in Shikoku, which is one of the main islands of Japan. His name was Kanichi Otsuka. As a boy, Kanichi was frequently called a wonder child. He read both Japanese and Chinese classics extensively, and showed genius-like abilities in painting and inventing. He also made correct predictions about the future of Japan and the world, which stunned surrounding adults. Kyososama decided to confirm the Divine Power with which he had been born by exercising this power in the real world. To do this, he left home when he was only 15. While confirming his inborn unity with the fundamental principle of the universe, Kanichi visited sacred places in Japan, including Mt. Koya and Mt. Ontake, and even traveled overseas to places such as the Sino-Soviet border. Birthplace: Shikoku Island, Japan

After some 10 years traveling on the Asian continent, Kyososama returned to Japan in 1921. He contributed to improving people's lives by starting an electrical business in Osaka. In four years he obtained over 60 patents. In 1925, Kyososama married Kunie Otsuka. As co-founder of Shinreikyo, Kunie Otsuka is now referred to by the title "Kyobosama". Kyobosama was born of a royal and spiritual lineage, and even as a little girl she expressed her true aspirations by saying, "When I grow up, I want to be the kind of person who can help other people." After marriage, Kyobosama came to realize that Kyososama had the Divine Power, and began hoping that Kyososama would establish a religion to help all people.
